The first few hours after a long-distance visit can be brutal. Your love has just hopped on a plane in the wrong direction, and a Sunday afternoon stretches before you. How can you fill those hours when all you can think about is how much you miss your partner, and how far away the next visit is?
Work on something for your relationship
Call your significant other while they’re traveling, and leave a sweet voicemail about how much you enjoyed the time together, so the message will be waiting for them when they reach their destination. Write in your long-distance journal, recording all the things you did together over the past few days. Upload and organize photos you took together.
Catch up
While your loved one travels, take the time to complete all the tasks you procrastinated on during your visit. Finish up schoolwork if you’re in college, or prepare for a presentation at work. Busy yourself with laundry or household chores that went neglected for days. Watch the shows your DVR banked for you. Call your friends to reconnect and fill them in on how the visit went.
Pamper yourself
Take a long bubble bath–or at least a long, hot shower. Prepare your favorite meal, get cozy in your pajamas. Listen to your favorite music and flip through a magazine. And whatever you really love to do, do it—whether your passion is painting, or reading, or playing basketball. Lose yourself in a hobby and enjoy some “me” time.
Another fun activity is to have your partner recommend one of their favorite movies that you haven’t seen yet. While he or she travels, you can pop in the DVD—the movie will make the time go by faster, and the two of you can discuss the movie over the phone the next time you chat.
